School assignment no. 3 – In the spotlight

This is my third assignment. The theme my teacher came up with is ‘out’, in its broadest definition.

I really struggled with my own interpretation of this theme. Eventually, I chose to photograph desolate places when the lights are out and the sun is set. To add another layer to the theme, I ‘singled out’ the subjects with my external flash (Canon 580EX II).

I used shutterspeeds varying from 90 to 180 seconds. When the curtain was open, I moved around and popped the flash a couple of timed by pressing the test-fire button. Oh, and I used a flash gel to make the light a bit warmer.

It was cold (-10 degrees celcius) and at times spooky, but I’m really pleased with the result. Especially since this is my first time using this technique.

School assignment no. 2 – High Voltage

I would have posted this entry a lot earlier, but I’ve been super busy. With school assignments like this mainly.

This is my second assignment for my photography class. The theme is ‘tension’. I chose to photograph ‘electrical tension’.
To be honest, I’m not really happy with these photos (although I like the first one). But hey, that’s the way it goes. Right?

Anyway, feedback is much appreciated. I don’t really care if that’s by e-mail, tweet or comment ;)

There are a couple of more posts coming up in the next few days, so you’ll have something to look forward to! :p

School assignment no. 1 – Solitude

So I just started out with my minor. The next five months of school will include photos, graphic design, art direction and more artsy stuff. Suffice to say I’m looking forward to (finally) doing a lot of assignments that include photos.

This is the result of my first assignment. The theme I had to use is ‘space’, in the broadest sense of it’s meaning. I had some pretty good ideas, but none of them were possible to do in less than a week.

It’s hard to be original with this theme, but I did my best, and I’m quite pleased with the result. The model in the photo is my friend Eva (thanks again!). She had to endure pretty harsh conditions; it was cold, very foggy and you really don’t want to know what her shoes looked like when we were finished.

Be sure to press the ‘Full Screen’ button on the bottom right!

First usage of the 5D Mark II in a warzone

When the Canon 5D Mark II was released, a lot of people were looking forward to seeing this camera, and mainly the full HD video, being used by journalists. Some even said this would be one of the solutions for the ongoing decline in journalism. I saw the first real footage of a 5D mark II being used by a well-known photojournalist Danfung Dennis yesterday, and I was quite impressed.

The London-based photographer witnessed horrible moments in Afghanistan while being embedded for three weeks with the US Marines. He filmed several encounters with the Taliban. The quality of the footage is of an amazing quality, and a lot of scenes could easily be from another Hollywood blockbuster.

Unfortunately, this footage is real and happening right now.

Check this 24 minute lasting trailer (the documentary will be released on the 13th of october) and see for yourself. The resolution is fairly low though, too bad they don’t offer a full HD version.

To find out more about this documentary, check out FRONTLINE: Obama’s War.
